The Adaptation and Resiliency Working Group (ARWG) supports the charge of the Commission by developing a comprehensive strategy for reducing Maryland's climate change vulnerability, providing state and local governments with tools to plan for and adapt to the more extreme weather and rise in sea levels anticipated as a consequence of climate change.

The Next Generation Adaptation Plan is a 10-year roadmap to increase Maryland's resilience to climate change. This plan was put together by the Adaptation and Resiliency Working Group (ARWG) with input from experts on climate resilience and adaptation, including state agencies, local governments, academics, and nonprofit partners. The Next Generation Adaptation Plan builds off the ARWG's previously published Adaptation Framework and prioritizes a subset of actions from that plan that Maryland should advance over the next 10 years. Through implementation, the Next Generation Plan will help Maryland become better adapted to the impacts of climate change, impacts that we are already experiencing.

The
Adaptation Framework is a comprehensive list of adaptation strategies and activities to guide the state’s adaptation efforts. The Framework outlines state actions across five sectors: Water Resources, Human Health, Working Lands and Natural Resources Based Economies, Natural Resources and Ecosystems, and Protecting Critical Infrastructure. Three focus groups and associated actions cross-cut all sectors: Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Local Government and State Service Delivery, and Climate Jobs and Training. The Framework includes both short and long-term measures that State and Local governments may undertake in planning for and adapting to the diverse impacts of climate change.
