Building Energy Performance Standards: Get Started
Main_Content
Welcome!
Maryland Department of the Environment is committed to decarbonizing large buildings for a cleaner future for all Marylanders.
If you own a commercial or multifamily building that is 35,000 square feet or larger, or have multiple smaller connected commercial or multifamily buildings, you will need to take action under the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS). If this program includes your building, you will need to submit benchmarking reports each year to the Department, and you may need to make building improvements over time to meet new performance standards.
We are here to help you get started. Check out the resources below to get you on your way.

The benchmarking deadline for 2025 has passed. If more time is needed, please submit a "Data Correction Request" form on the BEPS Portal. The benchmarking deadline for 2026 and each year after will be June 1.
The Department has issued a
Compliance Advisory providing additional clarity about the implementation of the amended Maryland Building Energy Performance Standards program.
