While Maryland has relatively abundant water supplies, in some areas of the State the current pattern of water use may exceed the sustainable supplies. Ensuring a sustainable use of water includes planning and management of our water resource in a comprehensive way that responds and adapts to changing conditions, balances competing uses of water, and promotes efficient use of the resource. In order to accomplish this goal, Maryland has undertaken a number of initiatives, including studies to better define our groundwater resources, encouraging local governments to better plan for their needs, assess hydrologic conditions and develop appropriate responses to drought conditions, and prepare for the potential impacts of climate change.
