Scrap Tire Playgrounds

The Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Environmental Service, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and community volunteers were all involved in the preparation and construction of the scrap tire playgrounds.

The pre-construction planning takes several months and the site construction takes three days. Scrap tires are used in a variety of applications at the playgrounds such as the use of whole tires in the construction of playground equipment, scrap tire chips as ground cover and scrap tire matting in the safety surface material.
