Maryland has developed over 50 indicators that are organized into three broad categories: public health, ecosystem health, and interface with the public. These indicators provide a snapshot of the status of critical environmental and public health issues that Marylanders face today (however, it is not possible to include indicators for every environmental or health issue). These indicators also provide the kind of information of interest to government and the public, and will continue to be revised and updated in response to public input and stakeholder comments, as well as improved science and further environmental monitoring.

Some of the indicators are also discussed in the 2000-2001 Environmental Performance Partnership Agreement Report.
