Back River Wastewater Plant
Main_Content

The Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dundalk is the largest sewage treatment facility in the state, processing an average of 100 million gallons of sewage every day. The plant is equipped with specialized treatment systems designed to remove harmful nutrients and tiny particles from the water. This processing is designed to thoroughly treat wastewater before it is released into the Back River and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.
The plant serves approximately 1.3 million people across the Baltimore region. While the treatment facility itself is owned and operated by the city, it serves a vital role for the surrounding community. The local pipes flowing into the plant are owned by the county to serve county residents. The state is the regulatory authority that ensures compliance with federal and state environmental laws.
