Public Drinking Water Sampler Certification

Certification of Drinking Water Samplers

Certification of drinking water samplers helps to assure the reliability of Safe Drinking Water Act compliance samples submitted to State certified laboratories. Performing the required sampling and testing of public water systems is the primary means of evaluating compliance with the standards and the safety of the drinking water supply. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) contracts with the Maryland Rural Water Association (MRWA) to provide training on drinking water sampling. Effective September 1, 2008, all drinking water sampling training will be offered through MRWA's Program.

The following topics will be covered during the four-hour class: location and collection procedures for bacteriological, inorganic, metal, volatile organic, and pesticide samples, along with a few exercises. At the successful completion of a written exam and a practical test, a certification number is issued to each participant.

For registration information, please contact Ms. Donna Dunlap of the MRWA at 410-489-5877 or visit their website at http://www.md-rwa.org/

Please note the following:
  1. Classes will be open to all interested parties as space is available (NOTE: Priority will be given to persons who are collecting drinking water samples for compliance under the Safe Drinking Water Act, including water plant operators, laboratory employees, water system employees, State/County Health Department employees, and well drillers).
  2. Certification cards will be issued by MDE via mail.
  3. Certification is valid for 3 years from the class date.

For the most current class list, please visit MRWA's website.  Please notify MRWA of any cancellations at least one week prior to the class. Dates are subject to change based on weather and demand for the class. A MINIMUM REGISTRATION OF 15 IS NEEDED FOR CLASS TO BE HELD. Additional classes will be added based on demand. Fees may be charged to persons not associated with a public watersystem.
