NEW MDE WEB PAGE! TESTING for LEAD in DRINKING WATER—PUBLIC and NONPUBLIC SCHOOLS

Date: May 22, 2018

Dear Interested Party:

We appreciate your patience as we have worked to develop a web page to provide information on Maryland’s new public health initiative, “Testing for Lead in Drinking Water—Public and Nonpublic Schools” (House Bill 270).  The site is now up and running, and may be accessed here: https://mde.maryland.gov/programs/Water/water_supply/Pages/Testing-For-Lead-In-Drinking-Water-Public-and-Nonpublic-Schools.aspx

At this site you will find answers to many of your questions, as well as training materials, guidance, sampling instructions, templates, forms (e.g. deferral, waiver, sampling, parent notification, etc.), a list of State-certified laboratories, and other helpful information.

To help spread the word, organizations representing large groups of schools (e.g. County Public School systems, Maryland CAPE, MANSEF, etc.) are encouraged to send this link to their respective schools.

IMPORTANT:  House Bill 270 applies to all occupied public and nonpublic schools serving children in grades Pre-K to 12 that receive drinking water from a public utility.  House Bill 270 does NOT apply to schools that have their own individual well(s) and are already subject to lead testing under the federal Lead and Copper Rule.  Additionally, the law does NOT apply to facilities licensed solely by the Office of Child Care (e.g. daycare centers).

Please note that although the site is now active, not all of this material is as of yet available.  Please check back periodically.

Thank you,
