The following systems are approved in Maryland within designated classes based on the level of Total Nitrogen (TN) removal capability shown.

Each unit has undergone a rigorous third-party testing process. Examples of third-party testing acceptable to the Department includes:

• National Sanitation Foundation (NSF)
• NSF 245
• NSF 40 Class I
• Bureau de Normalization du Québec (Canada)
• CAN/BNQ 3680-600
• European Committee for Standardization
• EN 12566-3
• University Study
• Must be peer reviewed
• Must be actual field work
• Cannot be laboratory testing only

As required by legislation, the Department must rank all Best Available Technology systems for removing nitrogen for onsite sewage dispersal systems. Rankings are to be provided for the following factors:

• Total Nitrogen reduction for the technologies
• Total Cost of the technology to include operation/maintenance and electrical consumption
• Cost per pound for nitrogen reduction.

The Department is to provide to the public this ranking of BAT systems. This ranking is largely based on information provided by the vendors. The Department strongly advises the applicant to contact each vendor directly for more information.

The BAT Technical Review Committee is accepting applications for determining systems for consideration as BAT and eligibility for Bay Restoration Fund grants.
