50. Hidden Pond

The Hidden Pond is a 2.5 acre restoration of nontidal and tidal emergent wetlands.  This project is located inthe West Chesapeake Bay -Severn River (02-13-10-02) watershed of Anne Arundel County.

In Fall 2005, The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources cooperated to convert this dam breach delta fan into a wetland.   Prior to construction, this site contained some dense areas of the invasive plant species Phragmites.

The site was planted with Atlantic White Cedar and Cranberry, species which still persist today.  When MDE scored this site in 2009 using the newly developed Mitigation Site Scoring Method, the site received the score of 89/100.  There has been some ongoing control of Phragmites on this site.  This site has developed into a successful wetland system and provides habitat, furnishes organic matter to the aquatic food web, and filters pollutants.  Since this project is on located on Home Owners Association property, it also provides aethetic functions and educational opportunities.
