24. Federalsburg Phase II

Introduction


The Federalsburg - Phase II site is a 6 acre (3 acres scrub-shrub, 3 acres emergent) combination of tidal/nontidal wetland.  It is located within the Nanticoke River Area - Marshyhope Creek (02-13-03-06) watershed of Caroline County, next to the Federalsburg Phase I wetland mitigation site.    

       


Construction

In the summer of 1999, the Maryland Department of the Environment, Town of Federalsburg, Department of Natural Resources, and the National Guard cooperated to convert a landscape management area/floodplain/former mine area into a tidally influenced wetland.        


Status

While this site has more open water than planned, this site has established into a successful wetland system.  When MDE scored this site in 2009 using the newly developed Mitigation Site Scoring Method, the site received the score of 72/100.  The vegetated areas are extremely diverse.  The site provides some valuable wetland functions including water quality improvement, recreation, education, aesthetic value, and wildlife habitat.
