The 2000 Chesapeake Bay Agreement included goals for voluntary wetland restoration, based in part on Maryland's goal. An interim goal of 25,000 acres of wetland restoration for the Chesapeake Bay watershed by 2010 has been set. Maryland's share of this goal is 15,000 acres.
The Comprehensive Coastal Bays Management Plan has a goal of 10,000 acres for the Coastal Bays watershed. Maryland is on schedule to meet its goals, with over 4800 acres of wetlands restored through 2000.
In 1997, the executive order from the governor established that all State agencies shall actively pursue wetland restoration projects on their lands where feasible, and give priority to managing policies that promote wetlands restoration, in order to reach the State's 60,000 acre restoration goal.
