Summer interns sponsored by the Maryland Department of the Environment tackled a range of issues, including matters related to greenhouse gases, water pollution, and radiation used in medical facilities. MDE’s summer intern program provides high school, college, and graduate students with first-hand experience working in environmental managememnt programs. The students also benefit from a series of lectures and site visits throughout the summer that provide a “101” education on environmental and public health issues in Maryland. The 55 interns worked throughout the Department, and each paired with a mentor. The students attended weekly seminars and field trips to gain insight into the breadth of environmental topics that MDE addresses.
Of his visit to the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant, intern Mike Buckley said: “This experience showed me the complexities involved in wastewater treatment and gave me a better appreciation for the importance of MDE’s regulations.”
Teams of interns completed projects related to environmental policy, and one of the teams presented its findings on plastic bags vs. paper bags to Governor Martin O’Malley for his consideration.
The summer students came from high schools and colleges throughout the state including: Carver Vocational Technical High School, Dunbar High School, Panquin High School, University of Maryland, Towson University, Morgan State University, Loyola College, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Stevenson University, Salisbury University, and Frostburg State University.
MDE also hosted 11 “Youth Works” students. YouthWorks is a program through the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board Youth Council, and multiple workforce partners. The program prepares teens and young adults for employment by offering work experience in fields matching the interns’ interests.
