Maryland Benefits From EPA Decision on Greenhouse Gas Standards
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency decision granting California a waiver to enforce its own greenhouse gas emissions standards for new vehicles is a positive development that helps support Maryland’s efforts to reduce air pollution.
The June 30 decision is more stringent because it allows the state to join California in moving forward with standards for vehicle emissions. The decision means Maryland’s Clean Cars Program, which is modeled after California’s program, can go into effect as intended for the 2011 model year. This decision follows new federal fuel economy standards that will begin with model year 2012.
The Clean Cars program is a key part of Maryland’s Climate Action Plan and the state’s commitment, through the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act, to reduce those gases by 25 percent by 2020.
