This May, MDE Secretary Shari T. Wilson and MDE staff participated in a record-setting Bike to Work Day.
During the Baltimore rally, Baltimore City Mayor Sheila Dixon and Director of Transportation Alfred Foxx, highlighted initiatives to make the City more bike-friendly, including adding bike lanes, bike racks, and encouraged riders to use racks installed on all city buses.
Setting records, the Baltimore area boasted over 1,000 registrants and the Washington area had over 8,000 registrants from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Rallies were held at sites throughout Maryland, including in Baltimore City, and in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s Counties. First-time participants included the Baltimore Collegetown Network with rally sites at Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
Bike to Work Day is an annual event to introduce newcomers to the world of bicycle commuting, to reconnect and support regular riders, and to promote alternative transportation. During Bike to Work Day, newcomers can ride with seasoned commuters and learn how to negotiate traffic, maintain a bicycle, and set up a bicycle for efficient commuting.
Bicycle commuting is a great way to exercise and help the environment. For more information see the following sites:
