Electronics recycling, or eCycling, keeps harmful materials like lead, mercury, and arsenic out of our environment. Recycling your old devices also saves landfill space, conserves natural resources, and helps reduce the growing amount of electronic waste generated each year. The state also has requirements for recycling facilities that accept electronics, retailers, and manufacturers. You can learn more about eCycling in Maryland by reviewing our annual
report.
How to Recycle Your Electronics
Maryland law requires certain electronic device manufacturers to register with the state. Many of these manufacturers provide free takeback programs for their products, making it easier for you to safely recycle. Look for a toll-free number or web link on our Registered Manufacturers List to find approved takeback options.
Please let us know if you believe a manufacturer is not honoring its responsibilities.
In addition to manufacturer programs, electronics can also be recycled through retail drop-off (Best Buy, Staples, Apple, and others) and through county collection programs. Please contact your county for details on accepted items, hours, and any fees. Scroll down for a full list of locations.
Regulations for Manufacturers and Retailers
Maryland’s Statewide Electronics Recycling Program requires certain electronics manufacturers to register with the state and pay an annual fee. You may qualify for reduced fees if you offer free approved takeback programs for your products. Retailers may only sell devices from
registered manufacturers.
Manufacturers must:
- Register with MDE annually by March
- Label covered devices with their brand name
- Provide free takeback programs (if seeking reduced fees)
- Supply educational materials on data destruction and device sanitization
The following resources are available:
A retailer may not sell or offer for sale any new CED (covered electronic device) manufactured by a company that has not registered with MDE.
Noncompliance may result in civil and administrative penalties of up to $10,000 per violation, not to exceed $100,000. Retailers that sell unregistered products may be fined up to $10,000.
