Onsite Systems Training

Maryland Department of the Environment offers training through the Onsite Systems Division for individuals to gain certifications to: install sand mound systems, install at-grade systems, and install BAT systems. These courses can also be completed for CEU’s. The Department also encourages members of the on-site regulatory community to attend these courses for their own education; however, physical classroom space will be prioritized for installers that are obtaining certifications.

Full Courses for Initial Certifications

The following courses are required to gain the respective certification. They are full-day, in-person courses at MDE headquarters in Baltimore, and are free of charge. Courses are offered annually, generally late winter and early spring.

  • Sand Mound Installer Course - Upon completion of this course and registration requirements an individual will be certified to construct sand mound sewage disposal systems in the State of Maryland for a five year period.  This course is 7.5 hours and covers design, permitting and construction standards. Passing a written examination is required for certification. 
  • At-Grade Installer Course - Upon completion of this course and registration requirements an individual will be certified to construct at-grade sewage disposal systems in the State of Maryland for a five year period.  This course is 7.5 hours and covers design, permitting and construction standards. Passing a written examination is required for certification. 
  • BAT Installer Course - Upon completion of this course and certification by respective technology manufacturers, an individual will be certified to install BAT systems in the State of Maryland. The course is 4 hours in length and requires passing a written examination for certification. Please note local installation requirements may also be necessary.

Certification Renewal Courses

Required every 5-years for sand mound and at-grade installer certification holders, completed online.

The On-site Systems Division of the Water and Science Administration is pleased to announce that there is a new way for individuals to renew their current certification to install sand mound or at-grade systems.  

Prior to their expiration, renewal of a sand mound or at-grade installer certification can now be achieved anytime someone has access to a computer with a reliable internet connection. The courses are based in Google Forms and include an embedded video recording of training presentations created by MDE staff, followed by 10 knowledge check questions. To complete a renewal, click on the form below, enter the required information into the form, watch the video presentation, and answer the knowledge check questions.  This entire process should  take approximately  2 hours. 

  • Sand Mound Installer Refresher Course
    • ​This course is 2 hours and provides up-to-date information regarding sand mound construction. This course is required for contractors who have previously taken and passed the sand mound construction and seek to continue their contractor certification.
  • At-Grade Installer Refresher Course
    • This course is 2 hours and provides up-to-date information regarding at-grade construction. This course is required for contractors who have previously taken and passed the at-grade construction and seek to continue their contractor certification.  ​​
