Coal Mining in Maryland

Through grant money provided by The Office of Surface Mining through the Coal Mine Mapping Initiative, MDE has been able to partner and collaborate with Maryland Environmental Services, Maryland State Archives, and Frostburg State University to provide an online repository of historic underground coal mines to the public. This endeavor has consisted of many tasks over the past 15 years and remains an ongoing project as more mine maps become available.

The latest phase of this project welcomed 120 maps from the Consolidation Coal Company into the collection. Various agencies worked to make this a success through the preservation and cataloguing of maps by the Maryland State Archives, the creation of GIS based data by MDE staff, and the design and implementation of an online GIS tool by Maryland Environmental Services. The online tool provides a way for interested stakeholders to download and view these historic mine maps with relative ease.
