Dominion Resources SEP School Bus Retrofit Grant

In July 2004, Dominion Resources, Inc. (formerly VEPCO - Virginia Electric Power Company) awarded the sum of $600,000 to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for the implementation of projects that reduce emissions from school buses. Under an approved implementation plan, MDE disbursed funds to Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), and Prince George’s County Schools (PGCPS) to install diesel retrofit technology devices on school buses. These retrofits resulted in the following annual emissions reductions: 82.24 tons of CO, 13.32 tons of HC, 0.32 tons of PM, and 9.25 tons of NOx.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools

  • AACPS retrofitted 43 school buses with diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) and 8 school buses with DOC and Spiracle closed crankcase ventilation filtration (CCVF) systems.
  • The retrofits were completed in December 2006.
  • These retrofits result in the following annual emissions reductions: 15.22 tons of CO, 1.79 tons of HC, and 0.06 tons of PM.

Montgomery County Public Schools

  • MCPS retrofitted 171 school buses with DOCs and 80 International school buses (T444E engines) with International “Green Diesel” technology (DOCs and reflash).
  • The retrofits were completed in December 2006.
  • These retrofits result in the following annual emissions reductions: 58.90 tons of CO, 8.13 tons of HC, 0.21 tons of PM, and 4.01 tons of NOx.

Prince George’s County Schools

  • PGCPS retrofitted 101 school buses with International’s “Green Diesel” Technology (DOCs and reflashing).
  • The retrofits were completed in December 2006.
  • These retrofits result in the following annual emissions reductions: 8.12 tons of CO, 3.40 tons of HC, 0.05 tons of PM, and 5.24 tons of NOx.
