Safeway leads the pack
The Safeway grocery store in Olney has been recognized as LEED Gold Certified by the United States Green Building Council. The Olney store is the second store in Maryland to earn the distinction.
LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
In a Feb. 12 ceremony, MDE Secretary Summers, Montgomery County Executive Isiah "Ike" Leggett and Safeway Eastern Divison President Steve Neibergall unveiled the LEED plaque at the store.
The Olney store's environmentally friendly features include a pervious concrete pavement parking lot, a vegetative green roof and a public butterfly park that manages stormwater.
Safeway, Inc., is a member of the Maryland Green Registry, a free and voluntary program launched by Governor Martin O’Malley as part of the Smart, Green and Growing Initiative to promote and recognize sustainable practices by organizations throughout the state. The program offers tips and resources to help organizations set and meet their own goals on the path to sustainability. Organizations of all types and sizes are encouraged to join by visiting the Registry website and sharing information on at least five environmental practices and one measureable result.
Manufacturers sought to host summer engineering interns
MDE is seeking manufacturers to host P2 (Pollution Prevention) engineering interns for summer 2013.
The Department, in partnership with the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (MTECH), is offering a Pollution Prevention summer internship program that places undergraduate engineering students at Maryland manufacturers. Interns are selected, trained and assisted by MTECH staff to identify and implement waste reduction, energy and water conservation and operational efficiency opportunities.
