January 2009
eMDE is a bi-monthly publication of the Maryland Department of the Environment. It covers articles on current environmental issues and events in the state.
In partnership with Montgomery College, MDE’s pilot Student Emissions Repair Assistance Program aims to provide Montgomery and Prince George’s County high school and college students with financial assistance for emissions repairs. Through this new program, students in Montgomery College’s Automotive Program will gain experience repairing vehicles with faulty emissions, while vehicle owners will save money and reduce their emissions.
Through a grant received by the U.S. Environmental Protection AgencyMDE will provide up to $450 for parts need for the repair of emissions equipment for qualified student applicants. By easing the financial burden of vehicle repair, the State will be helping students clean the air they breathe by reducing the emission of volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. This is especially significant in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, which do not currently meet Maryland’s ozone standard.
Student participants must have failed a biennial VEIP and must own their vehicle and provide proof of current registration in Montgomery or Prince George’s County. All VEIP stations in these two counties are advertising the program and have applications available. The program runs from September 2008 through May 2009.
