Volume II, Number 5
September 2006
eMDE is a monthly publication of the Maryland Department of the Environment. It covers articles on current environmental issues and events in the state.
National Pollution Prevention Week takes place September 18-26, 2006. Pollution prevention, or P2, involves actions taken to reduce waste or pollution at the source. Industries are redesigning products, substituting eco-friendlier raw materials, improving the efficiency of their process and engaging in preventive maintenance to their machinery to reduce waste.
These changes can amount to big savings for industry, but the same approach can save money at home as well. See this Pollution Prevention Checklist for Your Home Office and Car for ways to reduce your impact on the environment and save money at the same time.
Households and small business can be just as effective in reducing waste. One thing everyone can do is to decrease the amount of unwanted mail received. Maryland citizens have embraced recycling, yet reducing materials such as paper products and mail before it reaches the waste stream is far preferable in terms of energy and raw material use. Eliminating junk mail only takes a few minutes and will certainly lighten your load when it comes to curbside recycling.
MDE is launching a print campaign to create consumer and citizen awareness of pollution reduction. The advertising campaign will run through National Pollution Prevention Week, September 18-26, 2006.
