Liquid Treasures Scratchoff

The Maryland Lottery Administration has released a new product: a $2 scratch-off ticket that promotes water conservation. In an innovative collaboration between agencies, the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) and the Maryland Lottery created the “Liquid Treasures” ticket. Applauding the joint effort, MDE’s Secretary, Ken Philbrick said, “the Maryland Lottery has provided us with a unique opportunity to share an important message with Maryland citizens.”

The blue-green colored tickets carry a variety of water-related images, and each features one of 16 different water conservation tips. The ticket launch date (April 12) was planned so that sales would occur throughout the summer months, when Maryland citizens typically use more water than during other times of the year. The ticket’s launch also coincides with a particularly dry period, with less than a half inch of rain falling anywhere in Maryland during the month of March

With a run of 2 million tickets, it is hoped that the unique appearance of “Liquid Treasures,” and messages such as “instead of using a hose, clean your sidewalk with a broom and save up to 80 gallons of water” will inform ticket purchasers about the importance of water conservation, and influence them to take steps toward reducing their water use. “If all Marylanders practice water conservation, we can help preserve our most valuable ‘Liquid Treasure’ – our water supply,” said Secretary Philbrick.
