MDE has collected the most practical, efficient and cost effective sediment control measures from various industries and combined them into one comprehensive standards and specifications document. Reducing the impact of sediment runoff on the State’s water resources requires procedures to apply control practices that trap and hold sediment-laden water on site.
With the General Assembly’s passage of House Bill 575 earlier this year, Maryland becomes one of three states to enact computer recycling (eCycling) legislation. The legislation requires manufacturers who manufacturer an average of more than 1,000 computers over the previous three years to register with MDE and pay a registration fee if they want to sell computers in Maryland on or after January 1, 2006. Since eCycling began in Maryland, more than 3,905 tons of electronics have been recycled.
The Federal Clean Water Act requires each state to develop a list of impaired waterbodies, and their impairing substances. The 303(d) List is used to determine the water quality status of selected watersheds. Using either the look-up tables or clickable map, anyone with internet access can query the water quality in Maryland’s 127 streams, lakes, reservoirs and estuaries.
MDE’s Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund (BRF) was selected as one of nine regional finalists among hundreds of applicants to receive the Innovations Award from the Council of State Governments. MDE’s Dr. Bob Summers, Director, Water Management Administrations, gave a presentation about the fund to a committee of legislators and representatives of state governments throughout the south.

Businesses for the Bay Members are recognized for proper disposal of Mercury powder-containing fluorescent lamps, used in lighting commercial office space.
