Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. marked 2005's Earth Day (April 22) by announcing $2.26 million in funding for improvements to Annapolis City Dock and the Cambridge Municipal Boat Basin. The governor also signed a homeland security agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard that expands Natural Resources Police enforcement capabilities within the safety zones in the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland. In addition, he announced the new Chesapeake Bay Safety and Environmental Hotline number: 877-224-R-BAY. [See associated article in this edition of eMDE.] The day's series of activities also included hands-on environmental education demonstrations with students from Samuel Ogle Elementary and St. Mary's high schools including water quality testing, Bay indicator species, the impact of urban runoff on neighboring watersheds, urban tree canopy and bay grass plantings.
