On August 29, the first day of school for Baltimore City schools, several MDE employees greeted students at Charles Carroll Barrister Elementary School with a donation of school supplies. Maryland Department of the Environment employees collected more than $500 during its annual employee appreciation cookout to purchase school supplies. The school is located only a few blocks from where the agency has its offices at Montgomery Park Business Center.
Secretary Kendl P. Philbrick and Assistant Secretary Stuart F. Wilkins, Jr., helped hand out composition books and pencils to each kindergarten and pre-K student. MDE also provided a supply of paint, crayons, backpacks and other items.
“It was a heartwarming visit to the school,” said Francis Moreland, one of the employees who helped purchase and deliver the supplies to the school. “The donation was well received by the students and the teachers.”
The Department and the school have interacted several times since the agency moved to Montgomery Park. During the official opening of the remodeled building, students came and performed songs by singing and playing recorders. On Earth Day, 2003 students and MDE employees held a clean up at Carroll Park, and visited the school to give recycling and other environmental presentations.
