Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 9, 2007) – Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. on January 3, 2007 announced Board of Public Works approval of a $1,200,000 grant for the City of Frostburg to construct new sewer lines and storm water lines to eliminate the City’s Combined Sewer System. The Board is comprised of Governor Ehrlich, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller William D. Schaefer.

“It is essential that the Department of the Environment work together with local jurisdictions to ensure the health, safety and well being of all Maryland citizens,” said Kendl P. Philbrick, secretary, Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). “Assisting Maryland’s local governments through the Bay Restoration Fund has been one of Governor Ehrlich’s top priorities.”

The grant will be used to construct new sewer lines and storm water lines. Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) contains untreated domestic, commercial and industrial wastes as well as surface runoff. The construction of the new sewer lines and storm water lines will eliminate the city’s CSO problem.

The total cost of the City of Frostburg project is nearly $3.1 million, of which more than $1.3 million is the local share.

“I wish to thank the Maryland Department of the Environment for their interest and support of our efforts in addressing our Combined Sewer Overflow issues,” said Arthur T. Bond, Mayor, City of Frostburg “With the City of Frostburg’s limited financial resources, we greatly appreciate approval of 1.2 million in funding from the Bay Restoration Fund.”
