BALTIMORE, MD – Members of the media are invited to join Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele, various state and local officials, and community members at the dedication of the Tot Lot playground in Washington Village located in southwest Baltimore. The project is one of many environmental rehabilitation projects that are underway in the area.

Construction of the playground in the heart of the Washington Village/Pigtown community in southwest Baltimore City is a cooperative effort that includes Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks and the Washington Village/Pigtown Community Association. MDE allocated $75,000 for the project, funds from the Maryland Used Tire Cleanup and Recycling Fund, which is generated through the collection of 80 cents per tire at purchase. Ten neighborhoods in the Monroe-Fulton corridor, including Washington Village, were selected as an Environmental Benefits District (EBD) by MDE in September 2005. An EBD brings together government and stakeholders to identify the range of issues that need to be addressed while focusing financial, technical, regulatory, administrative and policy resources to solve problems. As part of the EBD designation, MDE is contributing $75,000 as part of a matching grant for stormwater management projects in Watershed 263. Additional grant partners include the Chesapeake Bay Trust and Baltimore City Public Works Department.
