ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 18, 2006) – The Board is comprised of Governor Ehrlich, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller William D. Schaefer.
“This project is at the very core of the basic services citizens expect government to provide—clean, plentiful, potable water,” said Governor Ehrlich. “This project is necessary to improve service to customers and correct current leakage issues that costs the LaVale Sanitary Commission roughly $70,000 annually.”
The construction project will consist of a new 12-inch water line to facilitate abandonment of numerous unmapped, old existing small lines servicing customers along the US Route 40 corridor. Additional water mains will be installed in the area to provide looping, redundancy and increase hydraulic operation of the system.
The LaVale Sanitary Commission regularly experiences 30 to 35 percent water loss in the project area, losing about 35,00 gallons of treated water each day.
The total cost of the project is over $3.15 million financed through a combination of grants from the Water Quality Infrastructure Program and a low interest loan from the State Revolving Fund, both administered by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).
“The LaVale Sanitary Commission wishes to thank the Board and MDE for its grant,” said David S. Wendt, secretary-treasurer of the LaVale Sanitary Commission. “These grant funds will allow the commission to provide many of the residents of LaVale with a much more reliable water distribution system.”
Construction is expected to begin in April and be complete by October.
