ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 2, 2005) –Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. announced today’s Board of Public Works approval of a $457,600 grant for the design and construction of a new treatment lagoon at the Kennedyville Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kent County. The Board is comprised of Governor Ehrlich, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller William D. Schaefer.

“This project is necessary to eliminate untreated wastewater from impacting groundwater, preventing pollution that could lead to environmental or public health problems,” said Governor Ehrlich.

The construction project will replace an existing 50,000 gallons per day treatment lagoon, which is unable to meet the effluent limitations contained in its State Discharge Permit and upgrade existing wastewater pump stations.

“Kent County is very appreciative of the grant funds to support the construction in the new Kennedyville Wastewater Treatment Plant,” said Wayne L. Morris, director of the Kent County Department of Water and Wastewater Services. “These grant funds will help keep user costs affordable for Kennedyville citizens.”

The total cost of the project is over $3.3 million financed through a combination of grants from the Water Quality Infrastructure Program, administered by the Maryland Department of the Environment, and loan and grant contributions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture of roughly $2.3 million.

Construction began last month and is expected to continue for about a year.
