ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 1, 2005) – Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. announced Board of Public Works approval today of a $598,250 grant for the Town of Federalsburg in Caroline County to assist in the construction of a water storage tank system. The Board is comprised of Governor Ehrlich, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller William D. Schaefer.
“This project cuts to the core of basic governmental services,” Governor Ehrlich said. “It provides safe and adequate drinking water while improving fire flow capabilities and increasing overall system pressure requirements.”
A new water distribution system, including construction of a 300,000 gallon elevated storage tank and 12-inch water main to replace two existing aged tanks. The system will serve approximately 2,500 customers.
“Our need to replace the two deplorable deteriorating elevated storage tanks from the 19020s is a top priority of the town,” said Federalsburg Grant Administrator George E. Mayer Jr. “Thank for your never ending support and assistance of this most essential project.”
Total cost of the system will be about $1.7 million, of which $301,750 is the local jurisdiction’s share. The remainder will be composed of an $800,000 Community Development Block Grant. The state previously contributed more than $1 million to the project through the Maryland Department of the Environment’s Water Quality Infrastructure Program.
Construction is expected to begin in August with the project reaching completion in May 2006.
