ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 16, 2004) – Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. today announced approval of a $150,000 grant by the Board of Public Works to replace failing septic systems along Tilghman Island Beach in Talbot County by connecting those users to a sanitary sewer system in the area. The Board is comprised of Governor Ehrlich, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller William D. Schaefer.

“Each year, approximately 2,083 pounds of excess nitrogen will not make its way into the Choptank River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay resulting in enhanced aquatic life,” said Governor Ehrlich. “Forty residences will also have greater quality of life, peace of mind and a lesser impact on our environment.”

The new sewer line will connect to the existing main at the intersection of Leeward Lane and Black Walnut Point Road. The total cost of the construction project, which began last month, is more than $414,000. The remainder will be financed by the local jurisdiction. Funding for today’s Board action comes from the Water Quality Infrastructure Program administered by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

“Through the financial assistance being provided, the county is pursuing the improvement of living conditions to citizens residing in the Tilghman Island Beach community,” said Talbot County council President Philip C. Foster. “By working together, Talbot County and MDE are achieving the goals outlined in the 2000 Chesapeake Bay Agreement and we are providing water quality benefits that are good for the citizens.”
