Press Release

BALTIMORE, MD (JuLY 25, 2002) – The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) will hold a public hearing July 30 at 6 p.m. at the Charles County Government Building in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room, located at 200 Baltimore St. in LaPlata, regarding a proposed application from the Charles County Commissioners to appropriate and use waters of the state.

The State of Maryland is seeking public comment on a proposed water appropriation permit application from the county that seeks to use an annual average of 936,000 gallons per day (gpd) of ground water and up to a maximum of 1,195,000 gpd use to supply the Waldorf Water Service Area. The water is proposed to be taken from one well (#15) in the La Plata aquifer, located at the junction of Berry Road (MD Route 228) and Westwood Drive in Charles County.

State officials used data from geological reports and investigations made available to the MDE and an on-site, aquifer pumping test to evaluate any impacts the approval of the application may have on the resource and nearby users.

For more information on the application please attend the hearing or contact Mark Filar, of MDE’s Water Management Administration, at (410) 631-3591.
