ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 17, 1997) -- A project to remove fish migration barriers at the culvert systems in Anne Arundel County on the Sawmill tributary at Olen Drive and the Towsers Branch at Waugh Chappel Road will soon receive financial assistance thanks to Board of Public Works approval of a $55,000 State grant.

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"The project is important because it will reduce the overall velocity of water at these two sites and allow fish to migrate to spawning sites," said Governor Glendening. "This action also will enhance the aquatic habitat and biodiversity of the watershed."

In addition to the State grant, Anne Arundel County is contributing $149,000 for a total project cost of $204,000. Planning began in January 1997. Construction will begin in June 1998 and be completed in December 1998.

These projects will help bring fish back to the streams running through our neighborhoods," said County Executive John Gary. "They are important steps in restoring and preserving Anne Arundel County's natural environment."
