Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 4, 1998) -- A project to plan, design and construct nontidal wetlands and restore existing wetlands in the Patuxent River Estuary that runs through Calvert County received a financial boost today thanks to Board of Public Works approval of a $250,000 grant.

"This project will stabilize the shoreline of the Patuxent River and restore and enhance its water quality," said Governor Glendening. "By creating and restoring wetlands, the project also will help to reduce pollutants from stormwater runoff, and ultimately benefit the Chesapeake Bay."

In addition to this State grant, the Calvert County Soil Conservation District is contributing $157,400. An additional $628,500 is being contributed by the Maryland Departments of Natural Resources and Housing and Community Development for a total project cost of $1,035,900. Construction will begin in March 1998 and be completed in September 1998.

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contract, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"Yet another excellent example of a State and local partnership aimed at further protecting the environment to the benefit of us all," said Maryland Legislative District 27B Delegate George W. Owings, III.
