ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 1, 1998) -- A project to design and construct a pond with a shallow marsh for stormwater management control near Breezy Point in Calvert County today received Board of Public Works approval of a $165,000 grant.
"This project is important because the pond with shallow marsh will reduce nutrients and sediment from stormwater that eventually flows into the Chesapeake Bay," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "The pond will also help to control flooding."
In addition to the State grant, the county is contributing $65,000 for a total project cost of $230,000. Construction began last month and will be completed in November 1998.
"I am extremely pleased that the Governor and the Board of Public Works have funded this important stormwater project in Calvert County," said State Senator Roy Dyson. "It will greatly contribute to the ongoing improvement of the water quality of the Cheapeake Bay."
Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
