ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 2, 1998) -- A project to design and construct improvements for a stormwater management pond located off Camelback Lane in Columbia, Howard County, received Board of Public Works approval today for a $37,500 State grant. The improvements involve the construction of a shallow marsh at the entrance to the pond.
"The improvement to this stormwater management pond is important because it enhances the removal of sediments and nutrient pollution from stormwater runoff that would otherwise be carried to the Little Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This pond will treat runoff from approximately 66 developed acres."
In addition to the State grant, Howard County contributed $43,750, which will be matched by the Columbia Homeowners Association. Construction is expected to begin in August 1999 and completed by December 1999.
"This project will further the goal of providing stormwater management facilities for improving water quality in Howard County's streams and reducing the contribution of sediment and nutrients to the Chesapeake Bay,' said Howard County Executive Charles I Ecker.
Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
