ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 2, 1998) -- A project to continue streambank restoration efforts in Pea Vine Run and Rocky Gap Run, two tributaries of the Evitts Creek Watershed in Allegany County received Board of Public Works approval today for a $52,500 grant.

"By stabilizing the streambanks, sediment pollution from erosion will be eliminated in these tributaries of the Evitts Creek Watershed," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "The improved water quality in the watershed will benefit the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay."

In addition to the State grant, the project received matching funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Construction began last month and is expected to be completed this month.

"The Evitts Creek Watershed Project has been an outstanding example of bi-state cooperation in solving a myriad of problems in both Maryland and Pennsylvania," said Craig Hartsock, Manager of the Allegany County Soil Conservation District. "A key to the success of the watershed initiative in Maryland has been the State's Small Creeks and Estuaries Program. Without the support of this program, very few if any of the stream restoration projects could have been completed."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert L. Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
