ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 19, 1999) – A project to correct a massive gully at the outlet of the Church Creek culvert beneath
Maryland Route 5 in St. Mary’s County today received Board of Public Works approval for a $11,100 grant. Church Creek flows into Church Cove. The culvert outfall gully is located north of Saint Inigoes.
"Erosion from the gully has released sediment into downstream areas and that has blocked the downstream culvert, which has resulted in excessive flooding and additional erosion," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This project will allow Church Creek and Church Cove to recover from the erosion damage and improve the quality of those waters."
In addition to the State grant, the project has received $9,100 from the Maryland Soil Conservation District and $7,500 from the Maryland State Highway Administration. The project will begin this month and be completed in August.
"The residents of Church Cove will be very pleased that State funding has allowed the construction of the pipe outlet structure, which will control stormwater flow and provide protection against erosion," said Bruce Young, district manager of the St. Mary’s County Soil Conservation District. "This project will prevent hundreds of tons of sediment from entering the tidal waters of Church Cove."
Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is composed of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consulting contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
