ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 23, 1999) – A project to construct a new wastewater treatment plant and upgrade the Cone Branch pump station for the Town of Middletown, in Frederick County, received Board of Public Works approval today for a $100,000 grant.

"This new wastewater treatment plant will be able to process 350,000 gallons of wastewater per day," said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. "The new plant and the expansion of the Cone Branch Pump Station will prevent sewage back-ups into residential properties and eliminate overflows that caused raw sewage to be discharged into nearby creeks. The elimination of raw sewage from our waters is an important public health priority."

In addition to the State grant, the Town of Middletown contributed a matching amount. Construction began last May and will be completed in January 2000.

"The Town of Middletown appreciates the consideration of the State Board of Public Works for funding the $100,000 grant that will help our  community modify the existing Cone Branch Pump Station," said Andrew J. Bowen, town administrator.

Chaired by the Governor, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases,
property transactions and other procurement actions.
