Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 27, 1999) – Shoreline erosion and flooding in the town of North Beach, Calvert County, will be studied by the Army Corps of Engineers as the result of a new project funded today by the Maryland Board of Public Works.

"The North Beach community has suffered environmental and economic damage from flooding and shore erosion over the years," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This study will propose ways to preserve our precious shoreline and protect North Beach families from more flooding damage in the future."

A grant of $56,110 was awarded to evaluate the factors and conditions contributing to erosion and flooding problems in the community. The project will evaluate alternatives to control flooding, shoreline erosion, stormwater runoff and wetland degradation and provide cost estimates for implementing these alternatives. The project also received a federal grant of $61,110 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and an additional $5,000 from Calvert County.

"The Town of North Beach is very grateful for the assistance provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment in making possible this study of our flooding and shoreline erosion problems," said North Beach Mayor Mark R. Frazer. "This is an excellent example of what can happen when Government at all levels work together. The greater North Beach area will benefit from the team work."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
