Baltimore, Maryland (September 1, 2010) – The Maryland Board of Public Works approved more than $150,000 in grants to reduce pollution and improve water quality by upgrading wastewater collection systems. The Board is comprised of Governor Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp, and Comptroller Peter Franchot.

"These projects improve wastewater collection, save local communities money, and put people to work," said Governor Martin O'Malley.

The following projects were approved in the following locations:

  • Havre de Grace Sewer Main Replacement – Harford County

A $57,634 Supplemental Assistance Grant, in addition to a previous $166,500 Bay Restoration Fund grant, will fund the rehabilitation of the Main Street area wastewater collection system including repair and/or replacement of defective sewer lines and manholes. Once complete, the project will improve the efficiency of the wastewater collection system and reduce operating costs.

  • Fruitland Inflow & Infiltration Reduction Sewer Project – Wicomico County

A $100,000 Supplemental Assistance Grant, in addition to a previous $800,000 Bay Restoration Fund grant, will fund additional rehabilitation of the wastewater collection system including rehabilitation of several eight- and ten-inch sewer lines by lining them with plastic instead of full replacement at a significant cost savings. Once complete, the project will improve the efficiency of the wastewater collection system and reduce operating costs.
