What is SCATR?
The Source Collection And Threat Reduction (SCATR) Program is an initiative to reduce the amount of unused radioactive material stored by licensees. This program is available to Maryland Radioactive Material Licensees who have Unwanted Radioactive Material Sealed Sources.
The Department of Energy recognized that the availability of disposal of such sources is limited and expensive and has initiated this rare opportunity for licensees to have financial assistance in the proper disposition of these sources. The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) is working with the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration for disposition of these radiation sources that could be used for malicious intent.
How Does SCATR Work?
Radioactive material to be disposed of is identified and registered, outlets for the material are found, commitment for SCATR funds (to be combined with licensee funds) is obtained, a contract is made for packaging, transportation, and disposal of the material, the material is moved to a collection point, and collection of the radioactive material is made for disposal.
More information and registration instructions can be found at the following CRCPD Website: SCATR Program.
