2012 Rethink Recycling winners and artwork

The 11th Annual "Rethink Recycling" Sculpture Contest brought students from 23 High Schools across Maryland to MDE on November 16. A total of 59 sculptures created from recycled material were entered by students in the contest.

    MDE Deputy Secretary Kathy Kinsey and Grand Prize Winner Todd Ennis pose with Maryland First Lady Katie O'Malley, who presented Ennis and eight other Maryland high school students with prizes across four categories.

    Todd Ennis, a senior at Middletown High School, received the Grand Prize for his piece, entitled "Flag," which he hand-stitched from reclaimed textiles.

    Andrew Pressley, a Middletown senior, won first place in the Creativity category for his sculpture "Meeko the Dolphin," constructed from styrofoam, soda cans and water bottles.

    Serena Holmes, a senior at Suitland High School, won first place for Workmanship with her sculpture, entitled "Stanley," which she created from chicken wire, cloth, surgical gauze, dowel rods, paper mache, marbles, lights and bottle tops.

    Dakota Wassel, a North Garrett High School sophomore, placed first in the Use of Material category for his sculpture "Phunny Pharm," which he made using metal, aluminum, tin, bike chain, wire and a rake.

    Kaitlyn Bell, a Walkersville senior, won the People's Choice category for her sculpture, "Artist's Life," made from ceramic tiles, reclaimed textiles and metal.

    Brittany Buck, a Walkersville senior, placed second in the Creativity category with her sculpture "Recycling Queen," made of water bottles, wire, cardboard, compact discs, newspaper, plastic wrap, milk jugs, latex gloves, foil and bottle caps.

    Katie Jones, a senior at Middletown High School, won second place for "Birds of a Feather: Recycle Together," crafted from soda cans, styrofoam cups, water bottles, paper towel rolls and wire.

  10. Slide 10

    Dallas Hetrick, a junior at Northern Garrett High School, placed second in the Use of Materials category with her sculpture "Hubris ex Machina," made from metal, batteries, cardboard, paper, chicken wire, textiles, bottle caps, trash bags and steel.

  11. Slide 11

    Jillian Yant, a junior at Southern Garrett High School, won second place in the People�s Choice category for her sculpture, "The Flight of the Butterfly," which she made using metal, cork, aluminum cans, cardboard, plastic bottles, magazines, copper and light bulbs.
