MDE Partners to Improve the Youghiogheny River Watershed

The Maryland Department of the Environment celebrated the installation of a lime doser on Laurel Run near Crellin, Garrett County. The doser significantly reduces the effects of acid mine drainage to improve water quality for aquatic life. The doser is the result of a joint effort involving MDE's Mining Program and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, along with the Youghiogheny River Watershed Association and the Resource Conservation and Development Council of Western Maryland. The doser is a structure that allows for a prescribed amount of alkaline material to be added to the water to offset the effects of acid mine drainage.
 
The May 8 event included tours of the doser area and Crellin Elementary School's award-winning Environmental Education Lab, an outdoor classroom created as part of the reclaiming of a coal transfer station. MDE Deputy Secretary Robert Summers spoke about the doser project and MDE's mission to protect and restore our waterways. Crellin students provided information on the area waterways and demonstrated how the chemistry of the doser works to treat acid mine drainage
