EMECS 9 water summit coming to Baltimore

Back to this issue's cover page

Leaders in the protection and restoration of the world’s coastal seas are coming to Baltimore to share insights and lessons learned.

The EMECS 9 Global Summit on Coastal Seas will bring together leaders in government, non-government organizations, academia, and the private sector from throughout the world to discuss topics including the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Japanese tsunami, and the Chesapeake Bay. The conference’s purpose is to improve management of coastal seas in view of ecological, economic, and cultural issues.

The conference is scheduled for August 28 to 31 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. The Maryland Department of the Environment is a co-sponsor of the conference.  Everyone working on restoration of our streams, rivers, and bays is encouraged to attend this important international event. It is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to hear about the latest water management techniques and technologies directly from international experts.

Maryland has been a leading member of the International EMECS Center (Environmental Management for Enclosed Coastal Seas) since the first international conference was held in 1990 in Kobe, Japan. The second EMECS conference was held in 1993 in Baltimore. Then-Governor William Donald Schaefer was instrumental in bringing EMECS to Baltimore and was a keynote speaker at the event. That conference drew more than 600 participants from more than 40 nations. Other EMECS conferences have been held in Sweden, Turkey, Thailand, France, and China.
