A project to equip an ice arena with Maryland’s largest rooftop installation of solar panels earned Standard Solar the 34th annual Tawes Award for a clean environment.
Standard Solar installed Photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of the Rockville Blades Ice Arena, helping to reduce the needs for traditional sources of energy and lessening the need for fossil fuel energy production.
Youth Action Corps, a Frederick-based program where middle and high school students plan and implement learning service projects, with the environment as an area of focus, won the Tawes Youth Award. YACprojects have included planting trees and flowers, collecting trash, and helping with a recycling education project.
The awards are named in honor of J. Millard Tawes, governor of Maryland from 1959 to 1967 and the first secretary of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources.
Paul Kazyak of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources won the James B. Coulter Award, named after Maryland’s second DNR secretary, which acknowledges environmental contributions by a government employee. He played a key role in the development and implementation of DNR’s Maryland Biological Stream Survey and also formed the Boy Scouts of America Venturing Crew 202, which educates high school students in environmental science.
The awards are co-sponsored by the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Petroleum Council to recognize youth, adults, and private organizations involved in the restoration and protection of Maryland’s natural resources. The awards were presented May 16 at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis.
