Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 17, 1997) -- A project that will reduce nitrogen and phosphorus from stormwater in the Spa Creek area of Annapolis City, Anne Arundel County, will receive assistance thanks to Board of Public Works approval today of a $70,000 grant to design and construct a stormwater management facility.

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"This stormwater management project is important because it will reduce nutrients from stormwater runoff from 390 acres of highly urban drainage area," said Governor Glendening. "This action will improve the quality of the Spa Creek watershed and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay."

In addition to the State grant, the City of Annapolis will contribute $87,500. Future State grants are estimated at $192,500 for a total project cost of $350,000. Planning began in June 1996. Construction will begin in October 1998 and construction will be completed in March 1999.

"We are please that Maryland continues to recognize the importance of these projects in protecting the creeks in Annapolis and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay," said Annapolis Mayor Dean Johnson.
