Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 22, 1998) -- A project to design and construct a concrete flood barrier to protect water and wastewater treatment plants in the Town of Friendsville in Garrett County will soon recieve State funding thanks to Board of Public Works approval today of a $3,906 grant.

Chaired by Goevrnor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Tresurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve consultant and construction contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"This project will protect critical public works equipment from shallow flooding, as occurred during the Winter Storm of 1996," said Governor Glendening. "The water and wastewater treatment plants will now be able to continue safe operation during these flooding events, thanks to this additional State assistance."

In addition to the State grant, the Federal Emergency Management Agency contributed $23,437 and the County contributed $3,906 for a total project cost of $31,249. The project is presently being designed.

"On behalf of the town council, we are elated that once again the State has helped the Town resolve problems with its water and wastewater facilities," said Friendsville Mayor Spencer R. Schlosnagle.
