Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 22, 1998) -- A project to construct two stormwater management detention ponds in the Town of Grantsville in Garrett County, to help correct water quality problems during intense rainfall will soon receive a financial boost thanks to Board of Public Works approval today of a $185,250 State grant.

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"This project is important because the existing network of storm drains is unable to prevent considerable erosion during periods of intense rainfall," said Governor Glendening. "The project also will benefit the Casselman River by reducing the flow of sediments and pollutants."

In addition to the State grant, the town contributed $61,750 for a total project cost of $247,000. Construction will begin in April 1998 and be completed by September 1998. The projects will be located adjacent to the Grantsville Senior Center and in the Meadowview area.

"The Town of Grantsville is quite pleased to receive word of State funds which will be made available to assist in correcting stormwater flooding that has been a persistent problem in the drainage system the town," said Grantsville Mayor Frederick A. Holliday. The proposed detention pond also will improve water quality even during minor rainfall and will benefit the Casselman River as well as the Town."
